Minor Skin Surgery Service

Types of lumps and bumps that can be removed in the clinic:

Moles – brown, black or pink flat lesions in the skin. Most are innocent but any mole that is changing or causing symptoms needs checking by a doctor.

Cysts – these can form when a hair follicle or gland gets blocked. They can be felt in the skin as small swellings. Occasionally they can get infected

Skin tags – very common, benign, skin-coloured growths on the skin, that are often connected by a thin stalk.

Warty lesions – These can be found on the hands & feet. There are different ways of treating them

Lipoma – collection of fat cells that can be felt under the skin. These are usually not painful but can grow slowly to be large in size.

Seborrhoeic Keratosis – benign dark warty lesions. grey, black or brown raised lesions on your body or scalp that are more common with age.

Milia – multiple white bumps appearing under the skin, usually around the eye or nose.

Dermatofibroma – firm, raised, brown, purple or red growths that may develop after an insect bite or minor injury

Actinic Keratosis – rough, scaly patches that develop on areas exposed to the sun. Theses lesions are likely to develop into skin cancer if not treated.

Pyogenic Granuloma – small, bright red nodules that often develop after an injury and bleed easily, so are often removed

Keratoacanthoma – rapidly-growing lesions with a solid, scaly core that normally develop in sun exposed areas such as your face

Keloid Scar – over growing of scars, sometimes itchy and lumpy. Common in dark skin

Skin cancer – diagnosis and treatment. Mainly patients with Basal Cell Carcinoma removal (often shortened to "BCC removal") or rodent ulcers. Normally patients would need biopsies followed by excision if needed.

You will have your lesion removed by an experienced Consultant Plastic Surgeon,  Prof Sharif Kaf Al-Ghazal. Some specimens need to be sent for histological testing in the lab. Your surgeon will advise you if this is necessary at the consultation.
